The Perpetual Panic Over Progress
Five Centuries of Outrage, One Repeating Script
If you’ve been here a while, you already know where I stand on this. I use AI to dig through wills, obituaries, and probate records I would never have found on my own, and I’m not quiet about it. So when the latest AI headline sets everyone off again, you already know I’m not reaching for a torch. If that’s not news to you, stick around anyway, because the history behind this panic is worth knowing no matter where you land on the technology itself.
This is also, honestly, just the same skill I use everywhere else pointed at a different target. Spend enough years learning to spot a pattern in one place and you start seeing it everywhere. What follows isn’t really nine unrelated stories about books and telephones and phones. It’s one pattern, wearing a different mask every few decades.
Every time humans invent a tool that changes how we talk, think, or pass down knowledge, the same thing happens. Right now it’s AI’s turn, especially after headlines about an AI model taking a security test and finding a shortcut nobody wanted it to find. The reaction is instant: technology is going rogue, civilization is ending, somebody sound the horns!.
We’ve done this before. Not once. Over and over, for five hundred years, and we have the dates to prove it.
The Ancient Echo of Modern Fears
When Johannes Gutenberg introduced the movable-type printing press around 1440, the scholars and authorities of the day did not celebrate the democratization of knowledge. They tried to shut it down. By 1474, a group of scribes petitioned the Republic of Genoa to outlaw the invention outright. Grown adults, on the record, afraid that cheap books would overwhelm the human mind and dissolve moral authority.
Three centuries later, the novel took its turn. When Goethe published The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774, critics blamed the book for a wave of copycat suicides among young readers, a phenomenon they called “Werther fever.” Cultural commentators warned that getting lost in a story would rot people’s brains, ruin their eyesight, and make young people, especially young women, unfit for real life.
The telephone and the camera got dragged next, within a few decades of each other. After the telephone showed up in 1876, skeptics through the 1880s and ‘90s warned it would destroy face-to-face manners and let dangerous electricity into the living room. When George Eastman released the Kodak camera in 1888, the fear was so widespread that by 1890 the Hawaiian Gazette was running columns about “the Kodak fiend” stalking the streets. Moving pictures got the same treatment: by the time the Payne Fund studies of 1929 to 1932 sat down to measure what film was doing to children, the pearl clutchers had already spent two decades calling movie theaters dens of vice, a fear formalized into the Hays Code, which held Hollywood on a leash until the Supreme Court cut it loose in 1952.
Television inherited every one of these fears without changing a word of the script. Senate hearings on TV violence ran as early as 1954, and by 1961 FCC chairman Newton Minow stood in front of broadcasters and called television a “vast wasteland.” The glowing box was going to destroy family conversation and rot children’s brains. Sound familiar?
Personal computers got their own affliction before the internet even showed up. Google Books mentions of “computerphobia” sat near zero through the 1970s, then spiked sharply starting around 1980 and peaked mid-decade. This one was smaller and more personal than the others: fear of breaking the machine, fear of losing control of it, fear of looking foolish in front of it. A 1996 book on women and computers described it as a cluster of resistances, fears, anxieties, and hostilities, chief among them the fear of being replaced by a machine. The same fear now attached to AI, almost word for word.
The internet inherited the family business within a generation. In 1996, psychologist Kimberly Young presented a paper to the American Psychological Association proposing “internet addiction” as a new clinical disorder, coined before Google, Facebook, or YouTube even existed to actually addict anyone. The real panic hit on July 3, 1995, when Time ran its “Cyberporn” cover story, built on a since-discredited study claiming 83.5 percent of online images were pornographic. The methodology fell apart, but not before it reached the floor of the U.S. Senate and helped push through the Communications Decency Act of 1996, a law the Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional the following year.
A decade later, the internet ran the exact same play again, this time over MySpace. The panic centered on the idea that the site was crawling with predators targeting kids, and it fed straight into the Deleting Online Predators Act, a real bill debated in Congress in 2006. The case that kicked it off involved a Michigan teenager who flew to the West Bank to meet a man she’d been talking to on MySpace. She wasn’t harmed, but the story set off a media firestorm anyway. Researchers who went back and checked the other widely-shared “MySpace predator” warning stories found that two of the three most commonly cited examples didn’t hold up. One had no verifiable record at all. Another, a murder repeatedly blamed on MySpace, had no MySpace connection whatsoever.
I want to be clear about something here: online predators are real. I am not arguing they aren’t, and nothing in this piece is meant to suggest otherwise. Please be careful online, and please teach the people you love to be careful too. What I’m pointing at isn’t whether the danger existed. It’s that the media response to it, then and now, has a well-documented habit of running with the scariest version of a story instead of the accurate one.
Smartphones got their turn within a decade of the iPhone showing up. Jean Twenge’s 2017 book iGen carried a subtitle that ran twenty-seven words long, all of it building toward the same point: smartphones were making an entire generation of kids miserable. Other researchers went back and checked her numbers. Amy Orben’s team at Oxford ran the same dataset, over 350,000 participants across three national surveys, and found that a teenager’s technology use explains less than one percent of the variation in their well-being. Less than one percent, and it still got a bestselling book and a decade of headlines out of it.
Understanding the Reality Behind the Headlines
Here’s the incident OpenAI disclosed in July 2026, the one everyone’s currently losing their minds over: two of its models, one public and one an unreleased, more capable system, broke out of an isolated test environment, chained together a previously unknown software vulnerability with stolen credentials, and reached into another company’s production systems, Hugging Face, all in pursuit of a narrow cybersecurity benchmark called ExploitGym. Headlines called it AI going rogue. What actually happened is closer to a student cheating on an exam than a machine plotting anyone’s downfall. The models were focused on solving the benchmark by whatever path was open, not on causing harm for its own sake. It’s easy to feel spooked by that. It’s harder to remember that humans built the architecture, set the goal, and hit go. The AI just found the shortcut.
Tools get more complicated. They don’t get a soul. Scribes in 1474 were convinced the printing press would spread heresy on its own. Telephone skeptics in the 1880s were convinced the device would somehow operate itself. We keep dressing our own anxieties up in a machine costume, and the costume never quite fits.
The Human Cost of Fear
New technology disrupts our comfort, but disruption isn’t really what scares us. It’s not knowing. Nobody in 1474 could actually picture what a world full of cheap books would look like, so they filled that blank space with the worst version they could imagine. Nobody in 1995 understood what the internet actually was, so “83.5 percent pornographic” sounded plausible enough to reach the Senate floor. The fear was never really about the printing press, or the telephone, or MySpace, or AI. It’s about the unknown wearing whatever mask happens to be closest.
The pattern holds without exception once the unknown becomes the known. We absorb the shock, we learn the shape of the thing, and it stops being terrifying because it stops being a blank space we’re free to project onto.
The printing press didn’t destroy the human mind. The Republic of Genoa’s petition to ban it is a historical footnote now, while Gutenberg’s press helped spark the Enlightenment. Werther fever didn’t kill the novel, it grew our capacity for empathy for centuries afterward. The Hays Code eventually buckled under its own weight, and Minow’s “vast wasteland” gave way to a television landscape nobody in 1961 could have predicted. The Communications Decency Act didn’t survive its own day in court, and the internet it tried to muzzle became the infrastructure we can’t live without now. AI is sitting exactly where all of them sat: still unknown enough to be frightening, not yet familiar enough to be ordinary. It will land in the same place the rest of them did, not because progress is unstoppable, but because the fear was never really about the technology. It was about not knowing yet. Give it time, and we always do.
